Our Mission

The Hyperbaric Wellness Foundation Corp. is committed to reviving the strength and restoring the purpose of those who have dedicated their lives to service. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are neurological injuries that profoundly impact both mental and physical well-being and are highly responsive to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). By funding access to treatment, spreading awareness, and driving policy change, we work to make HBOT a widely recognized and accessible therapy for these and other service-related conditions. By locating those in need, facilitating treatment, and providing ongoing support, we bridge the gap between struggle and success. We work to shift the narrative–from survival to empowerment–ensuring that every participant is fully equipped to take on the next mission: thriving in life, family, and community. Our mission is clear: to change lives, restore leaders, and build a future where healing is the standard, not the exception.

The Healing Power of Oxygen for Brain Recovery

In this interview, Dr. Joseph Maroon shares how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) supports recovery from traumatic brain injuries and PTSD. Learn how this innovative treatment is helping veterans and athletes restore brain function and quality of life.

On the Frontline for Veterans — Recognized in Congress

Charlottesville Hyperbarics was recently recognized on the floor of the United States House of Representatives, where Congressman John McGuire (VA) described our work as being on the frontline in the fight for veterans living with invisible wounds of war.
This moment underscores the national importance of expanding access to hyperbaric oxygen therapy for those who have sacrificed so much.

When we were attacked on 9/11 many of the most selfless people I’ve ever known stepped up to make the security of our nation their personal responsibility. I am incredibly humbled and honored to count myself among those volunteers. As an Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran, I left the service with an immense amount of pride but unfortunately, I also lost friends and suffered TBIs. Later, I started having nightmares as well as suffering with sleep issues and anger issues (among many others) for about a decade. I didn’t know anything about HBOT and was extremely hopeless that things would ever improve. Best decision I’ve made in a very long time was to try it! My sleep improved drastically. My headaches and nausea went away, and my memory significantly improved. My mood improved for the better! I was lighter. And work seemed manageable again. I now work as the Veteran Program Director at Charlottesville Hyperbarics, and I can’t wait to introduce others to HBOT for PTSD/TBI symptoms. Hyperbaric Wellness Foundation hopes to play a role in their HEALING and not just help them manage their symptoms!

Originally from Raleigh, NC, I attended the University of Virginia for undergraduate studies. During this time, I began working part-time for Aquafloat. After graduating as a double major in Biology and Psychology, I continued my relationship with the team at Aquafloat and Charlottesville Hyperbarics and was trained as a hyperbaric technician. I enjoy long walks on the beach and quiet, candlelit baths.

In 2007, I relocated to Charlottesville from South Florida with my wife and young children, seeking a quieter place to raise a family. I had been a practicing pharmacist for over 25 years before discovering the healing benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. This drug-free approach to wellness led me to a radical career change away from pharmacy. Witnessing the incredible transformation in veterans who go through our program has been the most rewarding part of my professional career. I still call Charlottesville home, and I am proud to work alongside an incredible team providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy to Charlottesville and the surrounding communities.

I spent my academic career in pursuit of health for others, which culminated in my master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition & Integrative Health in 2020 from Maryland University of Integrative Health. It was while working in this space – interning for a functional medicine physician – that I was first introduced to hyperbaric oxygen therapy as it was offered in the clinic. I was immediately attracted to both the simple nature of the mechanics of the treatments as well as the profound impacts that pressure and oxygen could elicit. I regularly employ many of the skills I acquired while coaching nutritional clients today, whether that be directly advising HBOT patients on dietary or supplemental interventions they can use to optimize their outcomes, or simply providing a healing presence & welcoming bedside manner to our patients.

As a Marine Corps combat veteran who experienced firsthand the impact of traumatic brain injury and PTSD, I discovered the life-changing benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). After completing 40 intensive dives, I felt like I had a new brain—clearer, calmer, and more focused than I had been in years. That experience drove me to dedicate my life to helping others find the same healing. Today, I serve as a Hyperbaric Tech and Veteran Liaison at Charlottesville Hyperbarics, where I guide patients through their treatment and recovery protocols. I’m also proud to be part of the Hyperbaric Wellness Foundation, a charity focused on funding HBOT for those in need, especially veterans. This mission is personal, and I’m committed to sharing it with anyone searching for real healing.
